Best Quality Domestic Saw for Light Work
The Stihl MS 170 is Stihl’s entry-level saw. It’s exactly what you need if you’re only doing the odd bit of work, such as cutting firewood or doing some property maintenance with relatively small wooded areas. On the other hand, when you’re not doing too much work around the yard, you don’t want an overpowered machine that will take up more space, weigh more when you’re using it, and have a larger blade than you need to get the job done safely. This MS 170 ticks all the boxes for most domestic users. The 170 comes with either a 12″ or 14″ blade, which is on the smaller end of the scale but with plenty of cutting power.
For heavier work
The Stihl MS 211 is an upper-made range option that packs more punch than the 170 and has a more significant chain option. It comes with a 14″ and 16″ blade and a much larger power output that comes with that. At about 1.7/2.3 compared with the 1.2/1.6 for the MS 170. This extra power comes with only a little added weight at 4.3kg resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 2.5 versus 3.4 for the MS 170. So you’re getting a lot more power to tackle the more challenging stuff around the yard, such as thicker, harder wood, and more significant tasks. We recommend the MS 211 for anyone who expects to do a fair share of cutting around the yard that goes beyond the lighter duties.
