How to Sharpen Your Chainsaw

As a chainsaw owner, it’s important that you take care your machine. There are all sorts of makes and models of chainsaws. Many of them are of poor quality. But what they all have in common are chains. When you’re out cutting and all you’re getting is dust, with no chippings, you need to sharpen your saw! No matter your experience level, you can be as good as a pro at sharpening your chain with the Stihl sharpening tool.

Don’t Change That Chain!

Chains come in three different sizes. A new 325 chain is a heavier chain. The 38 low profile chain is shorter and doesn’t stick out as much. It’s one you’ll find on the cheaper saws. But no matter how long the chain, chainsaw sharpeners work in the same way. If you don’t see chips when you cut, you probably just need to sharpen the chain. If you look at your cutting tooth on the chain, one in ten people that come to us for a new chain has a slightly burred chain that doesn’t need to be replaced – just sharpened. So instead of spending 25-30 euros for a new chain, we suggest using a sharpener. You’ll be able to tell how worn your chain is from this helpful video from Kieran:
