How Environmentally Friendly are E-scooters?

How environmentally friendly are e-scooters? It turns out quite a lot! While, of course, a pushbike is the most environmentally friendly form of personal transportation, since it requires no fuel, an electric scooter is much more accessible. The reality is that most people don’t want to have to put in physical effort just to get to work in the mornings. E-scooters are more accessible, causing more people to choose low-emission transportation, which helps the environment.

How Environmentally Friendly are E-scooters?

A recent study from the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI found that e-scooters and other forms of “micro-mobility” replaced high-emission transportation methods such as cars and buses. The study found that sharing services for e-scooters and e-bikes can be a great way to reduce emissions in a city. Of course, e-scooters also provide a fun, pleasant and convenient way to zip from A to B.

High Energy Efficiency

E-scooters have low operating costs thanks to being highly efficient. Electric motors have few moving parts, which means they require minimal maintenance. They’re extremely lightweight and produce no direct emissions. An argument is often made that electric vehicles are no better than combustion engines since they often rely on power generated by coal and gas power generation facilities. But this not a fair criticism for two reasons. Firstly, our national grid is increasingly supported by zero-emission renewables such as wind. Secondly, the energy produced at coal and gas power generation facilities is far more energy efficient than a combustion engine, which wastes up to 80% of all the energy through heat.

Cleaner Air

Unlike combustion engines, which, no matter how efficiently they run, still emit noxious fumes into our outdoor spaces. In fact, air pollution is estimated to cause over 7 million premature deaths worldwide each year! The more we can clean our air, the better for everyone. It’s easy to assume that our green nation has low pollution levels, but this is not the case. Anywhere where there is a buildup of traffic, there is moderate to severe air pollution, which is terrible for our health. The only way to solve this problem is to remove petrol powered engines from our environment.
