How to Maintain Your Hot Tub at Home

How to Maintain Your Hot Tub at Home

We occasionally get questions from customers about how you maintain your hot tub at home. So here are a few guidelines to give you an idea of what you can expect and how to get the most out of having a hot tub in Ireland.

Keep your water clean

When running your tub, the most important thing is to ensure that the water is safe and clean and comfy when you’re using it. This is done by using essential water safety chemicals such as chlorine. We provide a range of hot tub accessories to make this relatively easy so you can have your water safe to bathe all year round.

Run your hot tub efficiently

If you plan to use your hot tub quite regularly, say three or more times per week, then you’re probably better off leaving your hot tub active. It will keep the water warm and save energy in the long run. This is because maintaining your water at a medium temperature is more effective than re-heating the entire body of water from the ambient outdoor temperature to a warm 40°C.
Of course, leaving your tub at that temperature all the time would be wasteful, so the most cost-effective and energy-efficient way to maintain a temperature is to keep it at around 25 – 35°C. If you need it warmer, you can do so a few hours before.

All Lay-Z-Spa hot tubs built after 2017 (which is all of the models we provide) include a power-saving timer to prevent accidental energy waste when your hot tub is not in use.

Consider the average, not the max

If you think you may only possibly have a group using your hot tub, but in reality, 99.9% of the time, it’ll likely be two to four people, consider opting for a smaller model such as the Miami Airjet, which can comfortably seat up to 2-4 people. This will save energy in the long run as there is less water to keep warm. However, don’t miss out on the fun. If you know you’ll have a larger group, then it’s definitely worth splashing out on a larger model such as the Lay Z Spa Hawaii, which can comfortably seat up to 6 people.

Maintain Your Hot Tub at Home: Insulate!

All the above steps will help you ensure that your hot tub runs well throughout the year and gives you a great compromise between easy access and lower energy bills. To make this extra effective, we recommend placing your hot tub on an extra layer of insulation to reduce heat loss via the ground. To supplement this, you can also get a Lay-Z-Spa cover that does an excellent job retaining your water’s heat day in and day out.
